“Unless the Lord builds the house,
they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman
stays awake in vain”. Psalm 127:1
There is
something to be said for Jehovah’s watching over persons, nations and things. This immediately injects a spiritual
component into everything, a concept many would reject out of hand. Now we have an opinion standoff, but is there
an objective proof, determining which way one should “cast his vote”? I would suggest two.
No. 1. The Jews. Previously I wrote about the fact that over
300 years ago King Louis XIV (the 14th) of France asked Blaise
Pascal, a great French philosopher, to give him proof of the supernatural. Pascal immediately answered, “Why, the Jews,
your Majesty—the Jews”. What did he mean
by so terse an answer? No speculation
needed. He tells us exactly what he meant
(See Pensees, para. 620, p.
285). He said the mere fact that the
Jewish people survived until the 17th century—to the time period in
which he was living—was nothing short of a supernatural phenomenon. Since, we have the privilege of adding 3 more
centuries to his total. And boldly can
add to the total the centuries comprising the Milennium—not only will they
continue on earth, but their longevity will be underscored by the fact that a
Jewish king will be reigning. How long
does it take to establish the fact of the supernatural?
No. 2. The Church.
Jesus said, “I will build My
church, and the gates of Hades (all the authority and power of hell) shall not prevail against it” (Matthew
16:18). As “vapid” (lacking liveliness,
tang, briskness or force) as the church is in America and Europe, it is
powerful in many other sections of the world and growing at the rate of 140,000
per day. Even now reputable sources put the strength of the church at one
million in Iran where an Iranian pastor has just been imprisoned for eight
years for his Christian faith. That will
strengthen the church! Out of such
weakness the church continues on. Does
this not suggest supernatural influence?
Back to my
opening sentence: there is something to
be said for Jehovah’s watching over persons, nations and things—and when He
doesn’t (Psalm 127:1), it all goes wrong.
That is precisely what’s happening in America right now. Name an area in America where we’re not coming
unglued. That glue can be put back only
as God is invited back in as Lord over our nation.
