In a day when all about us, in every sphere, the world seems
bent on self-destruction, we need to hear the reassuring words of our Lord
through the Apostle Paul, “Let us not be
weary in well doing: for in due season
we shall reap, if we faint not” (Biblical Book of Galatians, chapter 6,
verse 9).
When we understand that battles rage on every continent and
if not with guns, certainly with fierce ideas; when we see it’s still a time of
race against race (perhaps intensifying), anarchy vs. order, the demands of
history against the demands of the moment (e.g., the issue of marriage) and the
faith of the Bible against secular, godless humanism, we need some reassurance.
And very serenely this scripture reassures us God is in
control, that the final issues are His and that we are to calmly and patiently
hold to a course we know is pleasing in His sight.
If ever a world needed the patient ministrations of a people
who had no axe to grind, who cared only that God be glorified and that the
deepest needs of people be met, it’s now. I believe the world will listen to such people.
Our task becomes that of possessing our souls in patience
and calmly doing those things which bring glory to God. We don’t have to be in a hurry, but we
should be determined and committed to the long-range purposes of God. Having familiarized ourselves with a study of
them, we set ourselves to the task of “occupying ‘til He comes.”
